INSURGENCY: Religion is the cause - Emeka Anyaoku

The former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has said the contest for political powers is the main cause of the crises currently rocking the country. He also blamed the insurgency in the Northeast on religion.

The ex-Commonwealth scribe spoke at the opening ceremony of a national conference on human security held in Abuja Tuesday. Anyaoku, however, called for the establishment of an inclusive government since the country has already been torn apart by internal conflict.

The conference was organized by the National Orientation Agency and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. He said in a situation where such inclusive governance is absent, the task of reconciliation and healing of memories among citizens becomes difficult and even unrealizable.

Anyaoku said with the emergence of the Boko Haram sect in Nigeria, religion has become a contributory factor to the spread of insurgency and conflict. He urged Nigerians to continue to affirm the need for all religions to treat one another with mutual respect and love.

The Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Mike Omeri, in his welcome address, said the prevailing insecurity in various parts of the country necessitated the conference.
